Our tolerance for honesty…

“Honesty is the best policy”

We are taught this from childhood. We would reiterate it anytime, anywhere. But how tolerant are we towards truth and honesty.

We live in times where are there is a lot of space for grey.  Besides, what is acceptable to one group of people, maybe intolerable to the others. But at the same time, there are people who condone dishonesty, but cannot bear the truth. And it’s true, some pay a dear price for honesty.

When a Godman’s veil is exposed, the whistleblowers are punished. When a woman stands for her truth and dignity, she is given malicious labels. When a man stands by the honest woman, his motives are questioned. Sometimes, this really makes me wonder, “Why are we becoming an intolerant society.”

Of Course, there is white lies. But I am talking about the malicious lies, i.e. false stories told with the intent of hurting someone or being exonerated for one’s misconduct.

There are times we all hide things, there are times we sugar coat them, there are times we disguise the lies. We all do it. Some more than the others. And, we all have perfect reasons to support the need for that lies.

Let’s forget about national scandals/issues and talk about us. Isn’t it ironic, there are times when honesty wins you respect and there are times you are crucified for the same. There are big lies and small lies (btw, who decides the magnitude of the lie?), acceptable and unacceptable.

Irrespective of all, Honesty and truth keeps the social and moral structure in place. It is necessary. Without this, there would be chaos in all our lives. So let’s keep teaching and following that honesty is the best policy. Along with this, let’s increase our tolerance towards honesty.

“When you lie to someone, you rob them of their power to take a decision.”
